Diesel on clothes

I am trying to get the smell of diesel out of clothes after my DH's van had a leak. I didn't realise that if I just put the clothes in the washing machine it would get over all the other clothes and make the washing machine stink of diesel. I feel very silly for not realising this and now loads of our clothes stink as well. Have run loads of hot washes including with white vinegar but it isn't making too much of a difference. Has anyone managed to get the smell out of clothes or their washing machine? Or do I need to buy a new one? Any tips welcome! I feel very foolish!

Don’t know about the washing machine, but when DH or DS have soaked themselves in fuel I soak in a bucket of water and detergent for a bit, them hang outside, in rain shine, whatever the weather throws. Eventually the smell will go, but it takes weeks sometimes! It’s mostly overalls it happens to here, fairly regularly. 🙄
Maybe try cold washes on the washing machine to rinse it out. I’d guess it’ll wear off eventually!

Washing soda/soda crystals would probably help with this.

Thank you @AngryLikeHades and @user6432879631. I have got some bicarbonate of soda Rudy’s and the clothes are outside so am hoping the smell eventually goes away! The washing machine is smelling a bit better tonight too thankfully 😅
