Cleaning silver jewellery - has gone wrong.

Anyone know what hs gone wrong? I asked in a jewellers if they would have something to clean some solid silver jewellery that I had bought there. They sold me Hagerty silver clean. After dipping my jewellery in for the required no. of seconds and rinsing as instructed, followed by a quick use of a hairdryer to dry (shop told me to do this) jewellery is worse! It has lost it clarity and looks dull. I obviously will return to the shop but does anyone know what has gone wrong? The jewellery was expensive £200+ for a chain and pendant and I have earrings to match.

Did you not have to also rub with a soft cloth?

Figroll16 · 01/02/2025 19:58

There's normally a silver cloth included with silver dip -if not, a soft cloth should polish away any dullness

You need to buff it after drying.

Oh sorry, I should have said that I have been trying to buff with a soft cloth but it hasn't helped. I will try again though.

Thanks for all the replies. Any other suggestions?

Silver dip is specifically for getting rid of tarnish/oxidisation. It won't clean silver of other residue or scratches etc. what was the problem you wanted to fix?

Thanks, it was just tarnish that I was trying to lift. I've been cleaning it now with a soft cloth and think it might be improving a bit, but it certainty hasn't been a quick fix. At the same time I dipped some other silver (cheaper) bits and they have come out great.
