How best to clean a burnt on BBQ grill?

My blokey decided that he was BBQing at mine today (I got 1 hours notice!!) and his grill is disgusting!!!

How is the best way to get all the burnt on crap off and get it all shiny?

Could I soak it in the bath with something? It's a biiiiiig grill.

dISHWASHER TABS IN THE BATH.

Get the heat on, get it really hot, then make him scrape all the crap off.

I just used that Oven Pride stuff on my oven shelves, and it did a decent job on them, but you have to leave it for a few hours on really tough gunk.

second the biological powder in the bath. Leave it for a few hours, sparkles like new with very little scrubbing.
