We are doing some work to our house and trying to fix the problems we have with organisation in the process. We currently have shoes on the bottom two shelves of an ikea billy bookcase which is over-full and a handful of scattered shoes from my beloved family who can’t be bothered can’t find space on the bookshelf. We have a medium-width hallway so can’t cope with something enormous. We are not “shoe closet” type people, it’s more the wellies, multiple pairs of trainers etc

Just have the shoes used most often for popping out quickly / kids school shoes etc in the hall. The rest can be else where.
You could try over the door storage with a pocket for each shoe / ottoman beds where the shoes can be easily stored underneath/ in their boxes in wardrobes.

Why do you have sandals out at this time of the year? Anything not being used presently needs to be away/stored elsewhere.

My fault for using a stock photo, of course. Our pile is 90% trainers and wellies.

There are a couple of pairs of sandals, those could be stored away, that’s a good idea.

@RosesAndHellebores I suspect that's a stock photo.

OP, I live in Sweden where no-one wears shoes indoors and IME this is almost impossible to completely solve unless you manage to become a Neat Person who puts away shoes in Assigned Place.

We too have a Billy shelf in the hall (old width, 60 cm, happens to fit the space) for shoes but shoes in active rotation (like, daily) are kicked around near the entrance anyway. No-one would ever put away shoes in a cupboard or a pouch storage, shelf is as much that can be managed and that's mostly a "time to hoover" job.

However we do rotate seasonally - winter and summer basically. Out-of-season shoes are flung in the cellar in a box.

My problem is that anywhere which splits the storage / stores anything in use away from the hall just leaves us with a pile of shoes in the hallway that I need to put somewhere even further / split and decide where they go.

I need storage that helps my pre-schoolers and other half by making “doing the right thing” easier than not bothering. Magic storage, probably.

I’d love to see or hear about everyone else’s storage for inspiration!

Yes, this is exactly us.

We have a shoe storage bench in hall with 8 cubby holes, so everyone is allowed 2 pairs in it. Rest of shoes are stored in upstairs in shoe racks at bottom of wardrobe.

endsnewyearsday · 03/01/2025 10:59

Depends on the layout of your house really.

We have an under the stairs cupboard and we bought an over the door shoe storage rack. It holds 18 pairs. We keep the trainers/shoes on there that we are currently wearing (out of season shoes are upstairs in wardrobes Walking boots go in a plastic box in same cupboard. Unfortunately the cupboard isn't in the (small) hall so we have to carry shoes through to the kitchen which is annoying.

CharSiu · 03/01/2025 11:00

We are a shoes off at the door household, cultural. The majority are on shelves in the cupboard under the stairs. There is a small double height shoe rack right by the door that can fit 4 pairs on. My very wealthy brother when he had his house designed has a purpose built cloakroom off his hall with an en suite. He has stacks of brand new slippers in multiple sizes for guests, like hotel ones who can take them home.

ShoeJunkie · 03/01/2025 11:01

We have a Billy bookcase in our coat cupboard and I have added 3 extra shelves to it!

Saschka · 03/01/2025 11:04

We have two of these. Fits pretty much all of our shoes. Also gives us somewhere for school bags etc to live off the floor.

OldTinHat · 03/01/2025 11:27

If you're on Tiktok, I've seen a fab shoe storage on their shop. It pops up and you can get it in different sizes. I'm tempted to buy one for my kitchen but to house my crafting stuff, not shoes.

Realfastfoodie · 03/01/2025 13:10

Thanks all, this is really helpful. Not on TikTok but am sure I can keep googling and will find something.

I have realised part of the problem is that we have a lot of visitors, especially our parents, so there needs to be “spare” space for them. Maybe the “2 pairs each” rule and and more closed

I think maybe the answer is to have limited cubbyholes by the door and something more “closed” that the rest can be thrown in but near by?

We've got this. Hold 16 pairs of shoes two rows in each part. The little drawer at the top is pretty useful too.

Oh my gosh, I was just dealing with this exact problem! My hallway was looking less 'welcoming entryway' and more 'shoe bomb exploded.'

I finally gave in and bought a shoe storage bench. I know, sounds basic, but seriously, it's been the best decision.
I got mine from storagebench.co.uk – specifically from their shoe storage bench collection.

I specifically wanted the bench kind because our kids need somewhere to sit and yank their trainers off, and it just looks so much neater. You lift the lid, chuck the everyday shoes in, and BAM—clutter gone!

Here's a pic of mine, just so you can see what I mean!
