M&S towels look patchy after washing

I usually buy my towels from Dunelm, but picked a couple of hand towels and a bath mat up in M&S. The hand towels now have very obvious, large patches where the colour has faded. I’ve not used any bleach or Vanish in the wash, so I’m wondering if this is an M&S thing, as no clothes have these patches on them.

I've got several M&S towels from a year old to over 10, they're all lovely. There are different ranges though, of course. Mine are the luxury Egyptian cotton ones (bought last Jan) and my older ones are a similar quality.

I have a mix of M&S and Next Egyptian cotton bath sheets of varying ages. The Next ones are faring a lot better.

I bought some last year and they are all fine. They are the Egyptian cotton ones.

We had this on M&S towels bought about 2 years ago. The expensive ones (autograph or equivalent I can't remember without getting off the sofa).

Terrible colour fastness. Thought it was bleach at first but it has only happened on the darker towels, and we don't add anything to the wash other than pods and conditioner and we have washed our towels the same way for decades. Good to know it wasn't just us.

The towels themselves are fine, but they look dire. I need to replace them really but they are still functional so we are still using them, and have just bought plain white towels for guests.

Yes, mine have large faded patches and look awful. They are going to have to go, and I’ll be going back to Dunelm and Next. I thought I was treating myself to some quality by buying from M&S. They were good quality ones , Egyptian cotton

Whitening toothpaste can bleach fabrics, I don't know if that could be it. Although it would happen with all towel brands then! I just have the large luxury bath sheets from Primark, in white, which are seemingly indestructible.
