Scrub the wood work (sugar soap is normally best)

Light lots & lots of candles

open all the windows

Soft furnishings - vax or baking soda works well.
Rooms - fresh air, candles, burning essential oils (citronella, rosemary, tea tree etc) helps.
Bowls of vinegar around the room or a few bowls of charcoal will absorb odours.
Wipe down all painted surfaces - warm soapy water will remove a lot. Also try finishing with a damp cloth dipped into a solution of warm water with the juice of a lemon and a few drops of tea tree oil. Anti bacterial too as well as freshening up.
We moved into a yellow house. Totally know how hard it is. In fact, we lived at my parents for a week while we deep cleaned it - it was that bad. The worst thing we found was wallpaper. It had absorbed years and years of smoke and nicotine. After trying to clean it with a slightly damp sponge (yellow ran down the walls, I remember crying it despair) we gave up, stripped it off in the bedrooms, put up lining paper and painted the lot. The rest of the house we had to do a temp paint over the wallpaper job until we had more time to strip and replace.
