Rust spots on clothes

I have searched but no joy, so any help would be very welcome.
I noticed what looks like rust spots on DS's duvet cover and on a pillow case, but thought no more of it, but one of DH's work shirts turned up with one the other day.
Does anyone know what they are and how to get rid of them? I presumed it was something to do with the washing machine and so have done a 90degree wash today to clear it out, but any suggestions / ideas would be great! Thanks

I get these too and the washing machine guy told me to do a long, hot wash too. It did sort it for a while, but he did say that was because it's not really rust, its a build up of soup/gunk in the drum. If it really is rust (from a small hole in the drum, say) then it is only a matter of time before you will need a new one.

BTW lemon juice on rust spots works.

Thanks everyone. I hope the long hot wash has sorted it out and I am off to do the soap drawer - yucky!
