Is it possible for a sock to go missing in the washing machine?

I have just hung out some washing to dry on a rack and put away dry washing. One of my socks is missing. I have checked everywhere (my house is pretty tidy - and that’s not a stealth boast - just that right now at least there are no random piles of clothes where a sock may hide!).

this sounds weird but is there anywhere the sock could have got stuck???

Yes, they occasionally get stuck in the rubber rim around the drum.

Saisong · 16/11/2024 23:50

Have you checked inside the other clothes - in the sleeves etc?

Notcontent · 16/11/2024 23:52

Hmm - I just went to double check and not in the rubber rim…

Mine are always up a trouser leg

Notcontent · 16/11/2024 23:53

@Saisong - yes, and it’s driving me mad! How can something disappear?

Obvs the sock fairy has swiped it and it has disappeared. This has happened to me many times. There is no explanation but it happens anyway. You can use odd socks as dusters

It's probably my cat

In the olden days it was wire coat hangers which would appear out of nowhere and infest your wardrobe. But now the aliens have relocated their teleporters to washing machines tuned to carefully select single socks. I suspect that in a remote part of the world, eg. Argentina - someone is puzzling over the socks they don't recognise. Maybe on a distant planet a 20 foot alien with massive tentacles is scratching their cranoid appendage and wondering why the tiny bent sack-thing with jazzy stripes has appeared in their cleansing oojamaflips.

The only possible response to this is ... hahahahahaha, laugh out loud

I have a cloth forever bag where all lost socks get put and every few months I go through it and match those socks that have made their way back from their travels up

Where do they go? WTF knows

You can actually buy clips now to hold pairs together in the wash but a wash bag works

I made up a basket and called it "Sock Central" a few years ago. All the odd socks were put in. Every so often I brought out the basket in the expectation to match up the erstwhile socks. I think I matched up one pair once. I admit I let out a loud cheer. All the other socks remained odd. I demobbed Sock Central division and use the odds as dusters. I remain convinced there is a sock fairy that acquires socks for no apparent reason

It’s just so frustrating when something goes missing!

Yes. In our house it's the sock goblin.

Funnywonder · 17/11/2024 00:34

It might be worth checking the filter on the front of your machine - you know the wee flap you open and there's a cap to unscrew? Our machine wasn't draining properly and when I stuck my fingers inside the filter and rummaged around a bit, one of DS1's socks came out looking a bit sad and stretched and ripped to shreds. Make sure you put a towel underneath for the inevitable flood of water.

What I've done now, since I realised odd socks were doing my brains in? Buying socks of the same colour - he has black, I have blue and the only oddities are those bought for us ( yes people buy socks as gifts)

Notcontent · 17/11/2024 00:40

PANIC OVER - I had visions of myself having to check the filter tomorrow or worse having to get someone to pull the machine apart if there was a blockage - so I checked the drying rack for a third time and the sock was hiding in the neck of a turtleneck thermal top!!!

Yay! I keep finding socks and other unmentionables hidden inside duvet covers. I remember hearing a blood curdling shriek from my son’s room and running in, only to find him cowering against the wall because a pair of his brother’s scrunched up underpants had fallen out of his duvet cover. They were clean obviously, but they were - ya know - someone else’s keks🤣🤣

AutumnFroglets · 17/11/2024 01:01

I once found a washed sock in the fruit bowl.

Looking back at my movements I had a full wash basket and was walking towards the airer, my DD called me so I turned round to see what she wanted. I can only assume I spun around instead of gently turning and the poor thing went flying off to land in the bowl. We hunted for it for three days. No idea how a black sock can pretend successfully to be a red apple or yellow banana, but it did.

bettytaghetti · 17/11/2024 02:01

When DS1 returned from university he had 28 odd socks. He is an absolute nightmare! 😂

Monty27 · 17/11/2024 02:46

I have a bag of random socks patiently waiting for their pairs to turn up. It gets bigger by the year. Occasionally some turn up randomly. 🤷‍♂️

OriginalUsername2 · 17/11/2024 02:47

Mine are always inside the duvet covers.
