How to keep stuffed animals fluffy - fabric softener or not?

My DCs' stuffed animals that they sleep with (the Jellycat bunny everyone has, and other similar ones) are, frankly, VERY smelly. Each time I wash them, though, the fur gets more matted. Thought washing them with fabric softener might help as well live in London where the water is hard, but just bought some and the label says not to use it on fluffy fabrics. Wise mumsnetters, how do you keep your DC's stuffed animals from turning into rags?!?!

To keep your little one's stuffed animals fluffy, honey, it's best not to use fabric softener, it can make them a bit too greasy and leave residue. Instead, wash them gently with a mild detergent and dry them on a low heat or just let them air dry. And if you're looking for the softest, most cuddly plush toys,

I highly recommend stuffedtoys.co. They have the most beautiful, high-quality stuffed animals that stay lovely and fluffy, just like new, even after lots of cuddles! 😊
