Peg ring covers

Hi everyone! I'm probably going to sound very weird here, but we've recently moved to a new house and the garden is at the side of the house. It'll be great to be able to dry washing outside after years of living in a flat, but the garden faces a main road so ... What do people do about drying personal items (underwear) outdoors?

I don't really want everyone going past the house to see my (not so) smalls and I've been looking for a cover or something for my peg ring but not found anything that works. Any ideas, wise people of Mumsnet, or am I just massively overthinking this?!

I really don't think passersby are going to be paying great attention to your clothesline

EmeraldIsla · 03/10/2024 11:10

By a 'peg ring', do you mean a circular washing line? Never heard that phrase before.

If you do, can you not just put your knickers on the inside and outer clothes outside?

caramac04 · 03/10/2024 11:15

I always ‘hide’ my underwear on the inner lines of my rotary dryer. I’m sure nobody is interested in them but as one of 3 teen girls (many years ago) I was furious when someone nicked our knickers off the clothes line. No accounting for taste.

Ameliasvocalfry · 03/10/2024 11:15

I've googled 'peg ring' but am none the wiser. What is it?

I just hang underwear on the inner lines of my outdoor airer and larger items on the outer lines. No-one will notice or care though.

SanMarzano · 03/10/2024 11:15

I don’t dry underwear outside. I peg out everything else and then just use an airer indoors for the underwear. We have some radiator airers I’ll often use for this even when the radiators aren’t turned on.

StudioCreate · 03/10/2024 11:15

Do you mean a socktopus? I wouldn't even think about it 😂 no one is going to be that interested in your smalls.

Godesstobe · 03/10/2024 11:18

This reminds me of my best friend's grandmother who used to wash a pair of men's pyjamas and hang them on the line every week so her neighbours would not know that - shock, horror!!! - he actually slept naked.

PashaMinaMio · 03/10/2024 11:20

Jeepers creepers! As my mum might say “Nobody’s going to stop their ‘orse’n cart to look at your knickers.”
As others have suggested. Get a rotary washing line and peg your drawers on the inside lines.

Throwaway3696 · 03/10/2024 11:24

Thanks everyone. There's a bus stop right outside so it just feels a bit public 🤣

This is a 'peg ring' https://www.amazon.co.uk/HOMESHOPA-20-Piece-Windproof-Non-Slip-Portable/dp/B0CH3L7FBB/ref=asc_df_B0CH3L7FBB/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=699536989089&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6547177297286801902&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9180829&hvtargid=pla-2307744982271&psc=1&mcid=05b8a0c0ef463cd1a84aec8c5c55a02c&gad_source=1

Didn't know there was another name for it!

I'll have to stick to drying them indoors and embrace the fact that I'm clearly a massive prude! 😂😂

If you have a rotary line, put the underwear in the middle.

What do you mean by peg ring?

Detchi · 03/10/2024 11:29

Crossposted.

I've never seen a cover for those. The pants are pretty much camouflaged by each other on those things, I think, especially if you can hang it at the far end of your line away from the road. If your current line is a single one running parallel to the road maybe swap it for one like this https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8501240 and hang the smalls on the line further back, or something?

CellophaneFlower · 03/10/2024 11:37

I put knickers on the inner pegs and socks on the outer. I'm not overlooked though but I still do it 😂

There's an older lady near me whose garden runs alongside a road. She does a load of just six knickers every week and pegs them all out fully, each with 2 pegs. Her line is high and you just can't miss them all billowing in the breeze. Makes me smile every time 😊

twentysevendresses · 03/10/2024 11:56

@CellophaneFlower love this! Hanging her knickers out with pride...🤣 😍🤣

PortiasBiscuit · 03/10/2024 12:07

My Cat likes to bring me ladies’ knickers occasionally, watch out for him.

ChocHotolate · 03/10/2024 12:11

Could you put an airer outside & put underwear on this? It would be much lower than a washing line so less visible to passers-by

Throwaway3696 · 03/10/2024 12:25

Thanks everyone for the helpful suggestions and some very funny responses! I am definitely going to be referring to my peg ring as a socktopus from now on too! 😁

Detchi · 03/10/2024 12:55

Or go to IKEA and get an actual Socktopus with eyes and everything (IKEA Pressa)

Congrats on your new house OP, and enjoy your newly aerated underwear.

TheNuthatch · 03/10/2024 15:03

What about a thin pillow case with a hole in the top to feed the hanger through? They wouldn't dry as fast obviously but at least they would be covered.

BillieJ · 03/10/2024 17:31

When I had a rotary line, I did hang knickers and the like on the inside, but that was so the longer lines were available for larger items. Now I have a long line across the garden, and couldn't care less who sees what's on the line. If I did, I suppose I'd find somewhere indoors to hang them.

billybear · 03/10/2024 18:11

i put mine on an end so neighbours cant see them, fold over to make my big knickers look smaller

Astrabees · 03/10/2024 18:14

FFS!!!!! we are not living in Victorian times. Just hang them out on the line or your "peg ring" like most other people do, no one cares, no one is interested.

Why only 6 😬

Stravaig · 03/10/2024 18:17

Even it's a single line running parallel to the road, you can just hang the knickers on the inside aspect of the line. Peg a larger item, eg. T-shirt by the hem, and then within the pegs of the T-shirt, peg a couple of pairs of knickers by their narrowest edge, facing the house. Nothing visible from the road!

Saturday is no knicker day? 🤣
