Weird grey stains on white clothing

I keep getting these strange grey/brown-ish stains on white clothing (like the photos) that won’t come out even after using stain remover. Has anyone experienced this before and know how to prevent? I can’t work out where it’s coming from.

Could it be some dirt in your washing machine? Sometimes it builds up in the seal or maybe in the powder dispenser? You could try giving it a thorough clean and running a tub clean cycle.
