Cleaning carpet with it getting too wet?

Is there any possible way? The carpet by my front door is looking grubby (no shoes inside but it's an old beige carpet in a rented property and seems to attract dirt).

We're moving soon because our purchase completion date has finally been agreed so will be getting it cleaned properly at the end of tenancy. However, the agent is showing people around on Friday and I feel embarrassed about this bit of carpet so would like something to clean it without it getting too wet as it's difficult at the moment to avoid the area and leave it to dry.
