Hi

What do you think - we need to put the house on the market (sad) and I need all you houseproud ladies to give me the low down.

What would you do?

I've never had carpets cleaned professionally so want to know if it's loads better than just getting a machine that I can use more often - haven't a clue

PS - have 2 dogs so it does get quite messy here

We hired one from Homebase and then bought our own Bissel one from Argos. I didn't want hubby to buy it as it was £200 and I thought the novelty would wear off but it is great being able to clean up any particularly awful mess straight away.

cmotdibbler · 14/04/2008 19:30

We've just bought one from Bissel - it works fabulously, and with a 2yr old DS and cream carpets, we needed it.

I made DH cost it out as to prof clean vs buying one, and it worked out almost the same straight off.

Makes the house smell really good too, which will be important for selling a house where two dogs live

Thank you very much for your posts - never heard of Bissel.....do you think it would work on 'old' carpet stains as well? We've had a few parties

Well, I don't think the carpets in this house had been cleaned in 10 years. Not that it was a filth pit by any means, but def had some lingering marks. They pretty much all came out on the first go.

We got this one

We bought it also in mind of the parties we plan to have now that we have a house with room for more than 5 adults to congregate !

NotABanana · 15/04/2008 14:39

Some stains don't come out first time but usually after a few cleans they are gone.

Wisteria · 15/04/2008 20:36

Wonderful - I knew I could count on you lot

cmot - glad I'm not the only one who likes to live in a house , 10 years seems very reasonable to me!

Professional cleaning is good, but when you have LOs, it is so good to be able to do it yourself as and when. I would vote for buying your own cleaner.

I have a Hoover Steamvac, which is dead easy to use. You can clean a room in 10 minutes.

weasle · 17/04/2008 12:22

we hired one from b and q called rug doctor. it is fabulous. quite cheap - about £40 for a couple of days i think. you can buy them as well.
prev have had carpets prof. cleaned and didn't think it worth the money.

Wisteria · 20/04/2008 19:47

thanks weasle and ST x

Ihave a karcher puzzi 200 its amazing

I have a Vax 6150 (I think?) the orange one similar to this:

www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4052085/Trail/searchtext>VAX.htm

When comparing models check how much liquid they hold (clean and dirty water) as less means you will have to refill/empty machine if doing several rooms.

My VAX is great - I use it every few months and buy the liquid from Robert Dyas. You can also use to vacuum carpets although I have a Hoover for this. Only problem is storing all the equipment and tools it comes with!

HTH

poodlepusher · 21/04/2008 19:44

I got the (local) professionals in when we moved into a new flat which had been a rental.

We vaccumed first and the rooms were empty but it cost £20 for a large double bed room and £15 for each of the two small dble bedrooms.

And the guy got to carry the machinery up to the 4th floor when I was 7 mths pregnant and not intending to help.

and the results were MARVELLOUS

hairycaterpillar · 21/04/2008 19:50

I have done both had the professionals in...good result but expensive...and with 3 kids results didnt last long!!!

Bought a Bissell one £200ish but got it cheap £100ish after it was wrongly advertised online hee hee. I love it because now can just clean whenever I need to even if just a tiny patch somewhere. Worth the money I'd say.

smartiejake · 21/04/2008 20:30

I got a vax upright recently as the price at argos (£120) for this machine was about the same as having it professionally cleaned. The carpet came up a treat and now I have one to use on all my other carpets. ALso works on upholstery and small spills
