New towels

For the first time in my life, I'm in a position to buy a whole set of new towels.

Do you get what you pay for? Where would you buy towels from? I think we will have plain white.

I look forward to guidance from the Mumsnet Masses.... When discussing with DH he even said "have you consulted Mumsnet?".... Grin

When we moved house a few years back (and we're getting a dog so we use all our old ones for him) I bought a full lovely new set from Christy - they often do very good % off deals. They are so lovely and thick still. I also rate Soak and Sleep and I was really impressed, when our budget was tight, with the Primark towels I bought about 15 years ago that we now use for the dog!

LindorDoubleChoc · 26/07/2024 22:05

I've bought towels from M&S, John Lewis, British Home Stores, Habitat, Primark, Ikea. All the usual places. But by far the best in terms of quality and value have come from Dunel, and that's where I'll always go for towels from now on.

LindorDoubleChoc · 26/07/2024 22:06

Dunelm!

Ioverslept · 26/07/2024 22:07

I would avoid plain white, they won't stay plain white for long...

StSwithinsDay · 26/07/2024 22:08

M&S quick dry towels. I have replaced all my Christy towels with those. Good absorbency and dry really quickly.

MidLifeWoman · 26/07/2024 22:08

I just bought some lovely towels from Sainsbury’s. Better than the (cheap) John Lewis ones!

Anjo2011 · 26/07/2024 22:10

Sheridan. Often on offer at just linen. Have had lots of bargains from there.

Itllbealrightonthenight · 26/07/2024 22:12

I’d say The White Company. Bicester village has White Company outlet.
I find tumble drying for 15 mins when they’re 80% dry keeps them soft.

There's a sale on, on Christy and the Linen place someone mentioned! Thank you for the recommendations.

In our house we have me, DH and DS x 2 ages 16 and 17. How many bath sheets do we need? Two each? And do I want the extra large bath sheets? Hand towels I will do by bathrooms. Two for each one.

I'm going to end up measuring what we already have, to work out sizes...

@loverslept what colour do you suggest? Always assumed white in case I needed to do 90 degree washes!

2 extra large bathsheets each. It just feels luxurious. I have 2 bath towels, but no one else does, because they are for my long hair. I have 2 hand towels in each bathroom, but only one in the downstairs toilet and a complete set of spares. I am v into rotation, so they all get washed the same amount.

Soft, because I dry them to about 90% then I tumble dry for 20 mins (not letting the cool cycle kick in) with a wee tumble dryer sheet.

White, big, smelling great, soft. Feels so lovely, like a spa.

Ioverslept · 28/07/2024 01:08

Any colour you like really, I am not sure if the 90°C would make much difference as you are unlikely to have othe things in the same wash that would get coloured. I get the appeal of white but I find darker colours age better as the white one invariably end up either stained or looking worn and permanently dirty. Maybe it's just my washing!

BaronessBomburst · 28/07/2024 01:23

I prefer to have lots of smaller hand towels for the bathroom/ downstairs WC/ kitchen and change them more often. Especially useful in the spring and autumn when they always seem to be damp, or if you have guests. They don't take up more room in the machine and you can have clean ones every day.

Endogal · 29/07/2024 06:53

Another one for dunelm! Bought white towels from there over 4 years ago now and they are still pristine, look the same as the day I bought them. To keep them this way I only wash them with other whites and use vanish oxy action crystal white too.

Possiblynotever · 29/07/2024 07:00

I think the best place is TKMaxx. I have bought fantastic towels there at a fraction of the price, but they were all rather colourful ( which I like). I also bought some sheets there this year and was delighted with the quality ( Joules, I thinks). Very good cotton, although very colorful

Ineffable23 · 29/07/2024 07:03

I have white bath towels and white hand towels. The bath towels are about a decade old and are fine - still nice and white etc etc. The hand towels (which were from TK Maxx instead of the white company which supplied the towels) have gone a bit grey and nothing I seem to do (vanish, extra washes, hanging outside in the sunshine) seems to brighten them. I don't understand why one has changed colour and the others haven't but it's definitely something id consider in future.

Hollyhocksandlarkspur · 29/07/2024 07:05

Soak and Sleep. Bought big white towels there years ago and do give them a hot wash to keep white and kill germs. They still look like new. White goes with everything and looks clean. We just have bath towels two each and four for guests. Also I don’t think two hand towels is very many. We have about eight so can put fresh in loo every time someone comes to the house in big stack in cloakroom plus one in each in bathroom.

Wigtopia · 29/07/2024 07:06

Soak and sleep

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 29/07/2024 07:11

I like bath towels and hand towels, especially bath ones .The extra large bath sheets are pointless to me. They are too big to be useful and annoying to launder..

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 29/07/2024 07:11

Also white are fine if you only wash them with other whites.

paintedpumpkins · 29/07/2024 07:15

Why go for boring white when there are so many lovely colours out there?

I agree about the large bath sheets. I bought a couple thinking they'd be luxurious but they were too big to use comfortably and they took up a lot of room.

For bath towels we have a different colour for each household member.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 29/07/2024 09:43

Good idea @GoodVibesHere

Deathraystare · 29/07/2024 14:09

I recently got 2 huge bath towels. As I am fat, they have to fit around me! Lost count of the times I have stayed with friends and their towels have not met me in the middle! They are a nice sunshine colour!
