Holes in my T Shirts - help!!

coolmum123 · 22/07/2024 14:18

I keep getting holes in my tshirts. Always in the same place. It's so weird. It never used to happen and it's started happening since I moved into my new place. I've attached pictures but I'm not sure if it's my washing machine or moths!! I have chucked out so many and keep having to replace them. Can anyone tell me what it is and how I can resolve please?

Thanks

Do you wear jeans with them? I often find it's from the worktops in the kitchen pushing my top against my jeans.

Sparrowball · 22/07/2024 14:22

Have you started driving? It might be the seat belt if the holes are in areas where it crosses your body.

If you're using a different washing machine in your new home check the inside of the drum and seal for damaged areas.

If it just happens to natural fabrics it might be moths.

leeverarch · 22/07/2024 14:24

Sharp bit on a metal supermarket basket? That's happened to me a few times.

KewBridgeSteamMuseum · 22/07/2024 14:24

Friction. Moths and washing machines don't have a special preference for the waist area.

I'm not sure there's a good way to avoid it - maybe tuck your T-shirt in when you're cooking or in the car, I'm sure it's the edge of my granite worktop that does it for me. "Since I moved into my new place" suggests that the kitchen is to blame.

My t shirts ended up like this when I wore a belt. The remedy, I found, was putting on weight and no longer needing a belt. 😁

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 22/07/2024 14:41

My partner always got holes in his t shirts around the waist and it was from his belt buckle. Not sure if that's relevant to your situation as it's only been happening since moving into your new place!

As someone suggested, check your washing machine.

Where do you dry your tshirts? Are they tumble dried?

ErrolTheDragon · 22/07/2024 15:01

It's not the washing machine or moths, they wouldn't always target the same area.

It started happening to me when we had our kitchen redone - worktop edge changed from wood to 'quartz'. It may be exacerbated by jeans button or belt buckles rubbing against the counter from the inside so changing those might help.
IME the only other solutions are to either make sure you never lean against the surface, or use an apron if you're wearing cotton tops. Other materials may be more robust.

DH and I have the same thing happening! We're as perplexed as you!

coolmum123 · 22/07/2024 15:53

Thanks everyone for your responses. They are most useful. Yes I do drive ( never thought about the possibility of the seat belt) I do wear jeans with a belt and my kitchen counters are stone!!! So it actually could be any of those. My washing machine is miele so I'm hoping it's not that!! I will take on board all the suggestions buy another load of tshirts and try and eliminate. I will def be looking into the button cover thing tho as those holes in the pic are exactly like mine!!!

Belt buckle or jeans buttons.

Frustrating it? Especially when the tops are on the pricey side and if the top is in otherwise great condition!! It's not like I keep wearing the same tops either they do get rotated! Such a waste of money.

Do you have quartz work tops?

Wear some of the damaged ones back to front while you figure out what is causing it.

Hadalifeonce · 22/07/2024 17:06

I have exactly the same holes in my tee shirts, I have worked out it is the quartz worktop, which is slightly rough on the edges, it happens when I am washing up as I stand up to the worktop.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/07/2024 17:11

I've wondered if there's any sort of edging strip available.

I doubt it, the edges of mine are beveled, but it's tiny.

Worrieditsamistake · 22/07/2024 17:14

100% this will be the stone worktop. Our old house had a quartz worktop and pretty much every top I had ended up with holes in it. Never happened before or since.

StillSmallVoice · 22/07/2024 17:34

Pretty sure it's the worktop. I stopped getting holes in my clothes when I started wearing a pinky whilst cooking.

StillSmallVoice · 22/07/2024 17:34

Pinny, as in apron

rivermum · 22/07/2024 18:02

I wear a lanyard at work. I get holes in my work tops, but not my 'home clothes', so I think the lanyard causes mine.

Jewelanemone · 22/07/2024 18:08

We get these too and have spent hours trying to work out what's caused them. Neither of us wear belt, our work surfaces are smooth and some of mine have never been worn with jeans.

flairyfairy · 22/07/2024 18:09

I had this. Stopped when I started wearing an apron in the kitchen. Still get them when I forget! Caused by leaning against a quartz worktop.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/07/2024 18:16

Those holes are very similar to the Pleiades star cluster.

Could aliens be trying to contact you?

Mind you I had similar holes in a pair of jeans but it turned out they had got caught in the zip of my suitcase. So not aliens at all... 🙁

Izzynohopanda · 22/07/2024 18:25

I always thought it was the washing machine. I’ve just had a t-shirt suffer the same fate, but others are fine.
