Where are the flies coming from?

I'm not entirely sure if I'm dealing with an outbreak of flies or if it's the same half dozen who keep re-appearing.
Came home from work to find 6 crawling on the inside of the kitchen window. Seemed a bit odd but opened the window, ushered them out with a fish slice and thought that that was that. Did notice that they seemed particularly dozy and easy to usher out rather than buzzing off which, in my experience, is what flies usually do as soon as you go near them.
Yesterday, I wfh and each time I went into the kitchen there were one or two flies which, again, I ushered out. In the evening, I gave the bins and things a good scrub, had already put all of the fruit in the fridge rather than left it in the fruit bowl and did a very thorough wipe down of all of the surfaces and things. This mornjng, there were four in the window and I have just ushered 7 out.
Why?? Where are they coming from? I am worried that there is a mass of maggots somewhere but I have checked all of the cupboards and can't see anything. I've checked outside the window in case there is something there but nothing. I picked up some fly spray when I was out earlier so, later on, will give the kitchen another good clean and then spray that around before going to bed.
Any other suggestions?
It is grim. Although somehow less grim than "normal" flies as they are sticking to the window rather than flying all over the kitchen or rest of house and spreading germs.

Possibly the weather. I've just been for a walk and it's definitely flying ant day today here. North West. They are everywhere - flying out of the brickwork!

You may have a dead mouse or bird somewhere nearby.

We also have flying ants! They're a different shape!
The idea of a dead animal is one I hadn't considered but I guess could be the case. That will be a fun task this evening!
