What would you get - a steam cleaner or a vax?

I need to get something to clean the carpets in my house - the nursery in particular has a carpet that used to be cream, but is now smeared with poo, sick and creams/oils. Would a steam cleaner be better than a vax?
TIA (although it is quite sad that I have nothing better to do on a friday night...)

i think TBH you would be better to hire out a professional one like a rug doctor. tha vax ones are good, but not good enough to clean a cream carpet thats stained,i think its about £25 to hire a pro one for the day, then maybe get a cheap vax one (tj hughes had one for £59) to keep on top of them!

I decorated ds's bedroom last week and was going to hire a cleaner but then I have always really wanted one of my own so decided to buy a VAX as it had been recommneded but then was advised to go with a steam cleaner. I got it on Friday and spent the afternoon scrubbing blue carpet until my hands were nearly blistered. Spot stains were not removed at all and TBH the carpet was quite worn out but did clean OK. Not sure it will be used again too soon. It is supposed to clean bathrooms and pretty much anything so naively I jetted some steam into my mouldy shower - still mouldy (although I didn't bother to attach the correct attachment and scrub for my life). I also zapped the taps and mirror - didn't see much difference.

Basically the moral of the story is if it is that bad there is no miracle cure and I think you may need the professionals.

Good luck.
