Keeping house smelling fresh

Hey,

How does everyone keep their house smelling fresh? We have a dog and I don't think he smells (but I know you can just get used to it) but at certain times of the month (heightened sense of smell) I wonder if I can smell a musty maybe poo like smell. A friend (honestly) said she couldn't smell anything so it may just be me but I'd still like to know what you do to make your house smell amazing.

My aunt had Alsatians and her house never smelled of dog. Or anything else come to that. She vacuumed regularly, and the dog itself was always kept clean. She aired the house whenever they were at home, and she had those gel fresheners all over the place.

Not many soft furnishings/curtains
windows open most of the time
hard floors downstairs except in sitting room

if I want the house to smell of something other than just fresh air I make a simmer pot, usually with lemon, rosemary, vanilla and black pepper (Williams sonoma style)

i can't bear air fresheners, plug ins or anything like that although I will sometimes light a St Eval seasidey candle.

i also treat myself to Rituals ritual of mehr reed diffusers in the bathroom when i'm feeling flush.

I have 3 teen dcs and 2 dogs so I get paranoid sometimes too! I don't ever use standard air fresheners or plug ins as they are toxic to dogs. I clean the floors daily, and make sure I keep the dogs clean. I also wash the dog beds regularly and open windows every morning. I empty the kitchen bins everyday and then put a bit of zoflora on some kitchen roll and pop it in the bin to keep it fresh. You can buy pet friendly wax melts online which are great if you have visitors on the way.
