Butter dish to fit 500g block of butter

Just as per the title, looking for a butter dish that holds a standard large (500g) block of butter, preferably with a cloche style lid so the butter sits on little plate/board/tray and lid lifts off that. Good seal, and bonus points if anyone can tell me the dimensions of a 500g block - google is sending me on a wild goose chase and I'm too tired to walk to the shop with my tape measure!

Le Creuset.

That's too big for a butter dish, will look gross.

soupfiend · 01/07/2024 08:28

Where do you get 500g blocks of butter, they're 250 in the shops

I think cancer research has some nice butter dishes in at the moment, they looked quite big, pretty patterns

Gross? Weird word to describe a butter dish.

I get 500g blocks of butter in Asda - better value than 250g. I have a Le Crueset butter dish but it doesn't fit 500g - I have to chop it in half!

IAmAnAdultHumanFemale · 01/07/2024 08:31

I've got an Emma bridgewater one but the butter sits in it

IAmAnAdultHumanFemale · 01/07/2024 08:31

And it's not gross at all whoever made that stupid comment

Cangar · 01/07/2024 08:31

I’ve never seen one that big. They tend to fit a normal 250g block.

Jennalong · 01/07/2024 08:32

Have you thought about using a sandwich box / plastic box turned upside down ?

MiddleagedBeachbum · 01/07/2024 08:33

I’ve been thinking of making one myself from clay, as I’ve seen the 500g and thought I’d like a butter dish for them too!

Cangar · 01/07/2024 08:33

I buy butter in 500g sometimes but cut in half for my butter dish

Poolstream · 01/07/2024 08:37

I think you need to look for a small cheese dish for that size of butter pat.

BetterCare · 01/07/2024 08:38

This company has one. It specifically says in the description designed to hold 500g butter block.

Another one here who always buys 500g but only puts half in the butter dish.

toomuchcardboard · 01/07/2024 10:32

Here is mine, it fits a 500gm block perfectly (250gm block for scale). It's made by a company called Kuhn Rikon, I bought it years ago, probably one of the oddities you can pick up from Tkmaxx.
They don't seem to be making them any more but there are some on Ebay.
Or perhaps you could use a cheese dish?

I love my Le Creuset but it does only fit 250g of butter sadly. I have to cut it in half.

I have this one

It’s brilliant.

I use 500g blocks in an Emma Bridgewater dish.

In Ireland all our butter comes in either 250g or 500g blocks. Well actually I think it's 227g or 454g

MaggieFS · 01/07/2024 11:08

Sainsbury's sell 500g.

Sadly my DH and DC are too uncouth to use a butter knife properly and they double dip. So the butter ends up with crumbs 🤢. Therefore I never put out more than about 125g at a time.

senua · 01/07/2024 11:12

bonus points if anyone can tell me the dimensions of a 500g block
Mine is 5" long x 3" wide x 2.5" high

Pleatedforehead · 03/07/2024 07:45

Thankyou all! as always Mumsnet users very helpful!! And thankyou for the dimensions, forgot my login details hence the late reply!!

Not sure if it's the thought of choosing to buy 500g of butter at all or in onr go that repels the second poster so much or the thought of a large butter dish but to each their own? I imagine life must be hard for someone so easily grossed out...
