Is this staining from washing machine?!

This baby vest went into wash and these marks/stains weren’t visible but now are. Any idea what could cause this? Also had it on a pink tshirt. Can’t work out if it’s something the washing process, or what would cause this that I wouldn’t notice till later. The pattern is all over, and it’s not food as kids wear bibs.
thanks for any help!

I started getting marks like that when the bearings went on my washing machine. They gradually got worse as more oil leaked out. Unfortunately it meant a new machine for me 😞

Do you ever clean your washing machine? Do you use powder, liquid or pods? Do you do all your washing at 30 or lower?

A repair man told me that unless you have a very new machine liquids and pods aren't always dissolved (newer machines are built to cope with them and lower temperatures). This can lead to a build up of 'gunk' which can end up back in the drum. He advised that about once a month the machine should be run with an empty drum on the hottest setting it has using any old biological powder (must be powder and in the drawer). My machine is 18 - I use powder, use a variety of washing temperatures and clean the machine every 8 weeks on its 95° setting. No problems with unexpected or unwanted marks on my laundry.

Yes I clean it at least once a month as it tends to get smelly fairly quickly. And I use liquid in the drum in a cap. Temp wise I do 30 and 40, 60 for bedding/towels.
thanks for the tip, maybe I’ll wash with some old school powder next time to try and clear whatever is leaving residue

I agree with the first reply. The only time I have ever had black oil stains appear on my mostly clean clothes is when the bearings on the machine were stuffed.

Probably time for a new washing machine, though repair men can replace bearings if you think that will be cheaper than a new machine (depends on the level of machine you'd buy!).
