washing a linen suit

I am helping an elderly relative get ready for a big event next month. He has a M&S linen miracle suit like this in a charcoal shade. https://www.marksandspencer.com/tailored-fit-italian-linen-miracle-suit/p/ds51759bac8d0330bb412efed0a4145ea6?prevPage=srp#intid=pid_pg1pip48g4r1c4
It really needs to cleaned - the label stipulates no machine wash. Would I be able to put this on a cold wash (or handwash) and drip dry, or does it really need to be dry cleaned?
I often machine wash my own linen clothes, but of course as this is a suit perhaps there's more room for error?

Dry clean it. The potential to ruin the suit is too high.

You could hang and sponge clean it…basically wiping it down inside and out with a wet sponge- 1st go with a bit of delicate fabric Persil and 2nd go to wipe off. Make sure water is cold as the cold tap can give you. Then hang dry.

Thank you SummerFeverVenice - I was just reading how tailors would sponge clean suits, interesting! And it might just work. Jurassic - yes this may be best, I am going to have a good look at it outside next time I am over there and if it needs a deep clean then I think that drycleaning will win.

Yes- linen suits have been around longer than dry cleaners. It can be done but not in a machine.

I wash my husbands linen suit in the machine cool wash

Sparrowball · 22/06/2024 17:38

Maybe steam it with the steamer at a bit of a distance?

crowgift · 22/06/2024 17:42

thank you @MrsPositivity1 is it a linen mix? Do you find it very creased/out of shape after? Luckily I can drip dry outside if necessary.
I have been hoping to invest in a steamer @Sparrowball so this might be a sign.

I advised caution because MrJurassic put his linen suit jacket in the machine on a cold delicate wash saying “It will be fine” and it very wasn’t.

Expensive mistake.

I have spot-cleaned subsequent linen suits in the way @SummerFeverVenice says and it’s been fine, hung on a shaped hanger on the line to dry. But I wouldn’t immerse a jacket again.

yikes, I hope to avoid that Jurassic. I'm thinking a dry clean to get it pristine, and then for future occasions a sponge clean.
