Fondue set??

Does anybody have a fondue set that they use? I like the idea for a change but no idea what to do in terms of heating / cooking ... my Mum said in the 70s she used to do bread and steak pieces on skewers or something ...

Any tips to share?

Heat the oil until hot enough to cook stuff with, we always have steak, chicken, mushrooms, prawns, you could have other vegetables, don't do potatoes or bread as it takes the heat out of it. Last one we did with godson and his parents and sister and we all had a great time.

We have one that I use lots for "treat" puddings- chopped fruit (esp grapes strawbs and banana)/madeira cake/marshmallows dipped in melted chocolate (Green & Blacks dark chocolate with ginger is my favourite)

Haven't used it for savoury though, would really like to try similar ingredients to sophiewd but with a cheese sauce instead. Will watch thread!

I was brought up by a step-mother from Belgium via Switzerland, so we had plenty of fondues in the 70s.

What you do depends on what kind of set you get - there are the cheese ones (little candle burners underneath) which you can also use for chocolate, or the oil ones (more like mini deep fat fryers as they have to get hotter).

For cheese ones, you mix gruyere and emmenthal 50:50 with a bit of kirch and dip bread in.
For meat, you need the best steak (my step-mother used to terrorise the supermarket meat manager in pursuit of Belgian standard beef...), and you can also cook mushrooms and veg. Serve with pickled onions and gherkins on the side, and lots of flavoured mayonnaise. Or at least that's the belgian way...
