Hiya all my mum gave my father his Filgrastim injection first one today however didn’t push the needle all the way to the syringe end slight part of the needle was showing? But all the dose went in with no pain or bleeding… is that okay or shall I call the hospital? My dad was shown how to administer but my mum wasn’t and she wasn’t sure if all of it should have been in the skin she’s now worried she’d done it wrong!

Suggest you have this removed from Housekeeping to General Health op. Ask MNHQ.

Meantime, i don’t think it will do him harm, especially if the whole dose went in. If she has an issue tomorrow she should phone the hospital ward/nurse.

I am not medically qualified but had a lot of filgrastim after chemo. Hope your dad is doing better.

Hello. I take Filgrastim every 5 days so think I can help! But I’m not quite sure what you mean.

I’ve had a couple of different types of Filgrastim syringes but they have all been spring loaded so that once you get to the end of the dose it clicks and the spring loaded plastic cover is pushed to cover the needle. If that hasn’t quite happened it doesn’t matter if the dose went in anyway. It’s fine.

Hello! Yes he’s on the 5 day basically the needle that goes in my mum didn’t push the whole thing into his skin only about half?😩 but the fill dose went in and the spring shot back to say it was finished she’s now worried it wasn’t deep enough😩

I’m case this helps this is what I do… I’ve been taking them for several years.

  1. (Optional) take out fridge to warm up as it’s less stingy if it’s room temperature- even 5 mins takes the chill off
  2. clean area with the swab that comes with the injections.
  3. (Optional) take syringe out of packet, point needle upwards, flick it so all the liquid is at the bottom of the vial then gently press to remove excess air (not essential, they don’t do this in hospital, but it makes it sting less).
  4. grab flab in lower abdomen bellow belly button (I normally alternate sides), put needle into the subcutaneous fat then slowly squeeze.
  5. when you get to the end of the injection you hear a click and the plastic cover releases. Slowly withdraw needle.
I used to have ones that shot the plastic cover over the needle at the end at force… these ones can bruise. But the ones I have had for the last year are gentler. When I had the more vicious ones I learnt to stop once all the dose was in but just before I pressed it hard enough to activate the spring, then I’d remove and press the last tiny bit to ping the safety cover in place. I did this because I was sick of the bruises. But you need to be very careful to get all the dose in if you do that.

Ah ok, I get it.
yes as long as it was in the fat under the skin that’s fine. Really nothing to worry about.

Hope your dad recovers.

Thank you so much your advice had be hugely appreciated- she did grab quite a large part of the skin and injected so I’m guessing it was the fat underneath as none of the dose came out and he said it felt like it was in there I think she was just scared but I’ve advised her to just push it all the way in now and I’ll go through your advice tomorrow my dad said he had it straight out the fridge but it was refreshing🤣 thank you ever so much sending so much love xx
