Bloody carpet beetles

Saw two carpet beetles on the side of our bed two weeks ago, removed all bedding, hot wash and dryer, hoovered mattress all floor incl under bed and skirting boards.. a week later we saw another one in same place so repeated the whole thing. Pillow and mattress also went in hot tumble dryer for an hour.
Tonight we saw a small freshly hatched beetle on our fabric (synthetic) headboard, wtf do we do now?
We have pets and a toddler so can't use anything harmful and there is no sign of them anywhere other than our bloody bed.
It's making me feel gross.

I'm sure they are harmless, we have a few pop up from time to time.
Sooner them than bedbugs 😲

PostalPanic · 24/03/2024 20:05

Could they be in the headboard? Is it removable?

merryweaather · 24/03/2024 20:08

@PostalPanic
DH has hoovered it all and we've had a good look. It's also synthetic so they can't be eating it. FML

He's unscrewed the headboard and hoovered between it and bed and every bloody where we can think of!

We had one or 2 earlier in the year, got a spray from amazon (which doesn't smell that great, but I feel like it really did work)

Pulled everything out, hoovered (then quickly changed the hoover bag, good old Henry) and doused the carpet in the spray. Next morning there were a bunch of dead ones, did the same again, hoover and sprayed, never saw any since. Every other week I get paranoid and go round with the spray again, just incase 😂

.... forgot to attach the link to the spray, I swear my brain today.

We have a 9 month old and a just turned 2 year old, so we only used the spray at night once they were in bed (was the living room we noticed one or two) and it dries quickly. The smell isn't like awful, it's kinda herby.

Thank you. They only seem to be on our bed and nowhere else! Is it safe to use on that? We've taken everything off and washed it twice/dryer etc and I don't have the energy to do it all again tomorrow morning

Mine was the living room for some reason, never saw them anywhere else (though I did go on a mass spree lmao). Just give it a good hoover (empty your hoover or change the bag after to make sure no eggs are there) and give a good old douse of that spray, do a wee patch test like somewhere you can't see first just to be safe but it never marked anything of mine. If its the headboard do it in the morning (time permitting ofc) so it's dry by the time you gk to bed. It says it doesn't smell but I found it did have like a herby, eucalyptus/tea tree kinda smell so it's not bad per say just not great either. Its gone up in price too i just noticed!! Was only i quid when I bought it lol!!

I haven't seen any since I used it but if you read the reviews, some say it didn't work for them... doesn't hurt to give it a try though and i watched a few come out after id sprayed, it defo did slow them down and make them curl up (quickly got the dust pan and brush out and got rid though. Just incase)

Hope it works for you. Horrible wee buggers thag they are 🙏

Thank you. Yes they are gross, I get they are harmless but we saw a larvae thing crawling across where my head goes so I don't want to spend every night going to bed paranoid

I pulled the couch apart (where ours seemed to be hiding under), its a U shaped couch so pulled all the cushions off and hoovered the base bit (is that what it's called? 🤣) same with the cushions so maybe do the same with the bed, hoover the mattress and the base if it's fabric ti make sure there's no wee hiders or eggs.

I'd be the same, especially with it being where you sleep. Even if they are harmless still gives me the creeps. Could maybe even try like a B and Q if there's one near they would maybe have it but amazon will deliver it next day

merryweaather · 24/03/2024 20:41

We did that and found one larvae case and nothing else. DH spent an hour both weeks hovering everywhere in our room, every bit of the mattress, skirting boards etc so I dunno where this little fucker has come from now. No sign anywhere else in the house ..yet

Wee stealthy ninja was maybe a tiny egg that managed to dodge the hoover gauntlet. Cheeky sod. I'm getting the spray out before I go to bed tonight. You've spurred me on 🤣
