How do I get the charred marks off my stainless steel toaster??

I have a stainless steel Dualit toaster and have just noticed how black and charred it looks around the top where you put the bread in. Any mumsnet wisdom as to how to get it shiny again? Doesn't come off with usual cleaning spray.
I'm sure i should be rubbing it with a lemon or something equally unlikely, just not sure what!

I got mine off with a dab of Cif cream cleaner with bleach, worked a treat

I used 'method' stainless steel polish on my toaster - seemed to do the trick. Got it in the supermarket

You want this stuff. Mine is gleaming with minimal effort.
