Can anyone recommend a good food sealer please . I want to try one but wondered would it just be a gadget I wouldn't use once purchased .

Do you mean like a vacuum pack machine? We have one , it was brilliant when we first got it. Then we couldn't get more bags for it . Its lying about in a cupboard now.
