Really silly question about bleach

BarbaraVineFan · 01/03/2024 19:31

This is going to out me as a slattern, but I have never yet had occasion to bleach any white clothes in the washing machine. However, DD now has white school socks which are getting rather grey. How do I deal with these? Do I just put normal toilet bleach in the washing machine, or what? Sorry if this is a really basic question!

I wouldn't add to the machine. Better to soak in a separate container and then wash in the machine after to remove the smell. Don't soak for too long though as bleach is harsh and can damage clothing.

Might be better to use lemon juice, baking soda or distilled white vinegar to remove stains from whites.

i would use a stain remover like vanish

Alwayslookonthebrightside1 · 01/03/2024 21:41

Or get some Vanish for whites powder, soak clothes in hot water and the powder (I leave mine a few hours) then wash as usual and it’ll get a lot of the stains out

Also an important thing to note with bleach generally (not really relevant to socks) :
Bleach + suncream = bright red stains

Bleach in sink before wash, please believe me don't put it in washing machine! X

ClemmyTine · 01/03/2024 21:52

Use thin bleach not thick. Ace laundry bleach is good.

Also if you do try the bleach you could do a tester one first rather than put them all in!

Personally I decide not to care! Sunlight works well though.
