How on earth to clean this...

Ds5 has become very very attached to a light up star like that attached. It contains aa batteries and led lights, and the cover cannot be removed to clean. It sleeps with him every night and I'm pretty sure will soon have a whiff (there's been a lot of fever illnesses and night sweats lately). I presume it'll be puked on too eventually.

I'm not hot on fabric cleaning, does anyone have any ideas?! I did look at dry cleaning but that seems to entail dousing in solvents instead of water, still in a spinning drum, so it'll still mess up the function.

Take the lid off and pour a little on the sponge and give a little scrub

Ask the manufacturer.

I'd be looking to buy a new one so you have a replacement should the cleaning experiment go tits up.

Personally, I would use some warm water mixed with a little washing up liquid or detergent and give it a brisk rub with a damp flannel, followed by a rub down with a dry towel, possibly a little blast with the hair dryer.
