Not much of a dilemma really

Fix it

Don’t fix it but then can’t use the car. It is actually illegal to drive with a cracked windscreen

WYorkshireRose · 27/01/2024 07:02

Are you sure it isn't covered on insurance? Almost all fully comp insurance policies include windscreen cover with a small excess.

BobnLen · 27/01/2024 07:05

Have you just got third part insurance as it's usually as a separate bit on fully comp, and doesn't affect your no claims, usually an excess for full change and a repair is sometimes free, well it was last time I had a repair.

Hollytrees1 · 27/01/2024 07:17

I haven't got the money to pay for it . I am with a hastings essential and I am fully comp but essential doesn't have the windscreen cover on it

For those saying its usually covered by insurance, unfortunately its not a given these days. Changed a few years ago and its often a sneaky add on instead. Check your policies!

Expensive lesson OP. You need it fixed though or risk points or a fine. Maybe use a credit card and transfer to a zero interest. When is your policy due? Make sure you add cover.

Hollytrees1 · 27/01/2024 07:23

If I was to change my insurance cover to the one above which does have windscreen cover will they let me claim for it straight away does anyone no

If it's not too bad maybe look into having it repaired, rather than replaced.

You can buy kits to do it yourself, or Autoglass do repairs.

BobnLen · 27/01/2024 07:25

Yes, I found that there were a lot of add ons when going through comparison sites to keep the headline price low so use Aviva as long as they don't put it up too much each year as they are quite forgiving and you don't have to say whether your car is on the drive or road and stuff like that

Is there any chance you could get a windscreen from a breakers and get that fitted OP

Hollytrees1 · 27/01/2024 07:26

I could try that I jist feel so stupid for getting wrong insurance its my own fault really

Cookiedefender · 27/01/2024 07:28

Does depend where the crack is, areas in direct line of drivers vision and in area swept by wipers would be classed as illegal, so an MOT fail.

Cracks cannot be repaired.

BobnLen · 27/01/2024 07:29

When does your policy end, it might look a bit odd to change it mid way and then get the screen done. You may be able to get a repair if it is not in the area which is the driver's vision

mum11970 · 27/01/2024 07:32

Have you had it looked at by a windscreen company? If the crack is under 10 cm it can usually be repaired rather than replaced. If it’s not in your field of vision (about a 30cm from the mid point of steering wheel) it may not need repairing urgently and can be put off until you’ve saved enough. Don’t panic until you’ve had it checked.

BobnLen · 27/01/2024 07:36

Where is the crack and how long is it

Hollytrees1 · 27/01/2024 07:40

It's in the middle of the windscreen when we had the Frost it seemed ro appear and looks like it is growing over to driver side so think it will be urgent plus worse thing is MOT is due March

No choice but to ring around, get quotes and replace or scrap the car if its not worth much.
£1k seems very expensive, not gone through a main dealer have you?

Hollytrees1 · 27/01/2024 08:27

Thanks everyone I got a quote for 495 and ordered a 0 percent interest credit card. Will remember to add windscreen cover on my next policy

Remember a windscreen claim will mean a higher premium the following year (unless ncd covered) and most have an excess of £100 to £150.

Its not the win win you might think, i ve easily driven 1m miles over the last 35 years and had 2 replaced windscreens (will be 3 now i ve said that!!!)

BobnLen · 27/01/2024 08:42

That's a good price and you usually would have had to pay an excess anyway

@Cookiedefender windscreen claims don't usually have any impact on NCD. I've claimed for both a repair and a full replacement of a windscreen in the past 5 years and neither impacted my NCD, or following year's premium. IIRC I paid around £75 excess for the repair and £150 for the replacement.

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 27/01/2024 16:11

I’ve also claimed on windscreen cover it hasn’t effected ncd. Once a full repair ( I paid the excess) the other time was for a chip ( no excess)

ohtowinthelottery · 27/01/2024 16:25

I once claimed for chipped windscreens twice in the space of 6 months. Both total replacements due to position of chip. Didn't affect NCB. Both were caused by stones shooting up and hitting the screen. False economy not to get windscreen cover IMO
