Cleaning candle smoke off a ceiling

Yes, it’s those bloody Yankee Candles and no, it’s wasn’t me <looking at you, DD>.

I’ve seen all sorts of things suggested online but has anyone found one method that works?

Magic eraser works.

(mine was a Neom that went rogue proving that even wanky candles can be arses).

Do you wet them or just use dry?

Wet.

I didn't actually try it dry so it might be worth trying that first, because mine was a wall and it dripped so I had more to clean!

Thanks, I’ll give it a go. I’m actually in a really bad mood now - she recently moved out and did mention about the smoke on the ceiling but I hadn’t realised how bad it was as O didn’t go into her room that often. I went in there tonight to prep the room for painting but the ceiling is covered in the stuff - if the magic eraser doesn’t shift it (and tbh I’m not optimistic given how widespread it is) I might need to repaint the whole thing or shell out for someone to do it.

And there’s my tale of woe for this evening!

Not helpful for now, but to avoid smoke from candles, you need to keep the wick trimmed quite short - no more than 1/4 of an inch long.

SirChenjins · 22/01/2024 19:47

Yes - but did she listen to me when I told her that? Of course not…

I always trim my wick these days, but this recent one just suddenly set off black smoke leaving my wall looking like the back of a fireplace (slight exaggeration!). I've used all sorts of cheap and naice candles for years without wick trimming and never had this. Google said magic eraser hence trying it!

Sugar soap.

Sugar soap.

Yeah, if it's a whole ceiling this might be the best option.

I’ve given in - there’s too much of it so I’ve ordered a stain sealer and will repaint it while I’m doing the walls
