Do I need a microwave?

I need to get electrical a for a new rental apartment. It comes with cooker and fridge, washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher.

But I know I need a kettle at the beginning (and vaccuum cleaner). And a tv.

I will probably get a coffee machine in a while. And a toaster, as I do use that at home. And an air fryer. They are not urgent this weekend.

But I very rarely use a microwave. As in, maybe once a month??

But if I am solo, am I silly to not get one? For convenience meals or fast defrosting or the occasional popcorn? Or would the air fryer be sufficient? (I do use that at home so that would be my preferred option).

I rarely need to defrost in a hurry - if I forget to take out a planned dinner, I usually have other options instead. I tend to batch cook and freeze meals rather than buying ready ones. I like to cook from scratch.

But I am now in a job with long hours and not such convenient access to a large supermarket for a big weekly/monthly shop. There very much is a culture of convenience meals here.

Ahhhjj!

I've not had one for years.

Only you know if you need one though! But if you don't use one much, leave it for now and get one later if it becomes a problem.

Yeah I'm wondering the same thing right now, do people still use them as much as in the 80s/90s?

I use mine daily for warming plates or bowls, cannot stand a cold plate with hot food on it Grin

I do use it for cooking rice with that Sistema rice cooker and heating up soup but that last one is occasionally. The children use it for warming through pain au chocolate for breakfast. I think that's it. We also cook from scratch and do not eat ready made meals.

It’s very good for warming up leftovers. Do you have left over type of eating?

teudent · 12/01/2024 17:05

It depends what you use it for that one time a month. Mine is rarely used but I wouldn't be without it

We use it daily for porridge as saves washing up a saucepan. Ditto soup, baked beans, defrosting at speed.

Heat up leftovers, start off jacket spuds. Reheat coffee and tea.

It wouldn't be the end of the world if we didn't have one but I would probably miss it.

Actually, I do occasionally reheat my coffee, that's fair. And I probably should think of the convenience living alone.

I think I will start with the kettle and toaster, have air fryer (and tv) on the imminent list (like - next weekend!). But keep the microwave on there with the coffee maker as "probably - in the next few weeks".
