Fairy Laundry Liquid and allergies

I've used Fairy laundry liquid for years but suddenly members of my family are coming out in rashes and spots. Does anyone know whether they have changed the formulation? Or had this problem?

I think you may have something there. Many years ago my wife and I got similar symptoms. Turned out she'd changed to using Fairy laundry products. Although we weren't tested, once we stopped using them the symptoms went away. My wife, sadly has recently passed way. However I started getting similar symptoms just recently. Couldn't understand why. Went to doctor diagnosed eczema and prescribed medication. Made no difference. Eventually I remembered the problem from 25 years previously. Checked what laundry liquid I'd bought on special offer several weeks earlier. Yes Fairy. Have thrown it in the bin, and have had no more problems with itchy skin.

They changed the formula a while ago, late 2022. Perhaps they have done it again though if it's only recently bothered you? Or maybe you had older stock?

I only know because I messaged them at the time and have just checked when that was. It was more about the smell for me, it gave me the worst irritation.

are you rinsing your wash enough?
eczema family here.
we use whatever bio powder is on offer but really notice when (usually dh) we use a quick wash with less rinsing.

greenacrylicpaint · 13/01/2024 19:49

but yeah, my heart sinks when I see 'new improved formula' on trusted skin care products.

CornishPorsche · 13/01/2024 19:54

Probably. They did it to me a few years ago - I only found out on here! I'd been shredding my legs in my sleep again by reacting to the "new improved" scent.

Interestingly, the one I get on with now is Lidl own brand non-bio.

Hi there, we have noticed the same with our son and myself. We live abroad and my relatives being this our in bulk. Started the tablets that are from December so coincides with your post and reactions. Did you find out if the ingredients have changed? I've no idea what we'll use, our son reacts to the ones available where we live. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I switched from original to platinum,
my whole family , my little ones worse are covered in spots, rashes for months, been to docs nearly every week! Been given tons of different creams , as I said I haven't changed anything! Today it dawned on me that I had infact changed from original or platinum?! Must surely contain more chemicals?

Hi, our daughter started having skin issues around last summer. These gradually elevated (hives, extremely itchy inflamed skin actually clawing herself to the point of bleeding) from about last summer. She ended up at A&E in January and is living on antihistamines and was prescribed the dreaded steroids for short term. My husband and I also started itching. I had been using Fairy for years, and have called them, I was informed that they changed their formula in March 2024 to something more concentrated. I have obviously changed to another brand and still waiting for our appointment with a dermatologist. Not sure if it is Fairy causing this problem but such a shame anyway when they change a formula that everyone had trusted for years.

I had this too. Now use Ecover, no issues at all.

I've chucked the fairy gel x 2 stain removal in the bin , my 11 yr old came out in rashes on his neck and face , just realised its the new gel fairy washing stuff , I washed the flannels in it yesterday , then washed his face , next day he had a bright red rash on his face . Supposed to be for sensitive skin , what a load of rubbish

Ponderingwindow · 25/11/2025 17:01

I just looked up the fairy laundry liquid and their sensitive skin version. If that ingredient list is what they are trying to pawn of on the British people as hypoallergenic it is no wonder you are breaking out. It has multiple incredibly common allergens and eczema irritants right on the label.

Yes! A few months ago, DS came out in a rash & asked if I’d changed the detergent I use to wash clothes & I had! Fairy had been on offer, so I’d bought it. I washed a load of darks with it, including the clothes DS had worn. It always used to be ok for my family, but sadly no longer. I usually use Persil non bio & he’s fine again now I’ve gone back to that.

I’ve always used fairy or persil powder as I noticed myself and 2 of my DC broke out in a hive type rash when we switched to the liquid or pods. After about a week of being back on powder the rash was gone so not sure if it was the liquid/pods that had something different in them.

Emw2005 · 12/12/2025 12:47

We have used fairy for years however since the formula has changed we have all noticed a difference not only people but our dog has started to become irritated and itchy has anyone else had this. ?
