Heating Costs - gas v electric?

Despite being reasonably intelligent I'm flummoxed by gas and electricity costs. I've tried to work this out but does anyone know roughly if I would be better off having a "cheap" to run heater in each room and switching on and off when we use that room rather than keep putting the gas central heating on? House is 4 bed - 3 reception.

I would love a smart system but can't do that just yet.

Thanks!!

If you can only use one room at a time and keep it closed off from the rest of the house, then yes a single electric heater will be cheaper than heating the whole home with gas.

But are you sure that's what you are doing? If you have already turned heating down in underused rooms it does become much more complicated to figure out - electricity is currently nearly 4 x as expensive as gas per kwh, and if you have to heat a room from cold every time it might (depending on the type of home you're in) take some time to get to a comfortable temperature.

You probably also pay a gas standing charge so you won't reduce your gas bill to zero.

So it can be quite easy to rack up a big bill with electrical heating - if you have a smart meter keep an eye on it while you experiment!

How do you heat your water?
