Dry clean curtains

I've bought some crushed velvet curtains off marketplace - think B and M or something similar so not very expensive.

They stink and say are dry clean only.

Have you ever washed these in the machine and they turned out ok? thanks.

Could you spray them with Febreeze ?

If anyone is wondering the same thing I machine washed them on a delicates programme cold setting and they turned out fine! Phew.
