Dry cleaning curtains

Hi
I’ve just spent a small fortune getting my curtains dry cleaned, and they have been returned with white residue all over the lining. I suspect this is the chemicals that they use in the dry cleaning process? They reek of chemicals, in fact the whole room stinks, and the white residue is falling onto the floor. I’ve emailed Timpson customer services but haven’t heard back from them yet. Is this amount of residue normal? Thank you in advance.

Dry cleaning does smell chemically. It’s weird because you expect things to come back smelling lovely, but they just always smell a bit of the cleaning chemicals.

I’ve never had that left on any of my dry cleaning though. Is it residue, or has it reacted with the cleaning stuff and it’s the top coating of your curtains that’s falling off. Are they silvery? Are they okay underneath where the white is falling off?

Went to Waitrose that handle Johnson's dry cleaning. They wanted £75.00 to clean a pair of smallish curtains from Dunelm Mill. I could buy new replacement curtains for that price.
Although they said dry clean only on the label I thought I would risk putting them in the washing machine on delicate and guess what they came out fine and I have saved £75 or the cost of new curtains.
Two points firstly dry cleaning seems a rip-off and the second why do manufactures put on dry-clean only warnings when clearly they are inappropriate?

Thanks for your response. The lining that the residue is attached to is fine; the residue is falling from it and covering the floor. There’s still loads of it attached to the lining though and it is very strong smelling . Will see what the dry cleaners say when they respond, but certainly doesn’t look like it should have been left on there!

The reason for the "dry clean only" instructions on lined curtains (and often coats) is that the the outer and lining shrink different amounts, rather than because either fabric can't be machine washed.

I've also been known to buy new curtains rather than dry clean them! Vinted is your friend here..

Sorry, I missed the point of the post. I've never had any residue on any dry cleaning! Curious to know what Timpson's say.
