What do you use to wash a waterproof coat in the washing machine?
How often do you need to re-proof them?
Any tips?
Thank you

I've just got a new Helly Hansen waterproof. It says on the label to wash in the machine but without fabric conditioner, then to tumble dry to restore the waterproofing! Not sure if this would apply to all waterproofs though...

It depends what the waterproofing is. Wash machine to get any detergent out and then wash the coat with liquid soap. Either tumble dry if it needs reactivating or you might need to reproof by spraying or painting a waterproof layer back on. I do mine or the kids if they're no longer beading and water running off them. For my coat that's probably once in the season, the kids tend to get theirs disgustingly filthy so I do them more often.

I just wash as normal but don't use conditioner...conditioner is the death of waterproofing so I've read.

We have lots of various waterproofs, never had any issues.

I also use this. Once a year usually does it, and my waterproofs get loads of wear (and muddy paws).

I came on to say NikWax but so,some has already beaten me to it. So I will just add my support for their suggestion.

Buy the proper washing stuff, it's definitely worth it. But check what kind of waterproof it is (Goretex needs a different treatment to non-breathable).

Definitely clean out the drawer and run an empty wash either with a bit of tech wash or vinegar before attempting to wash your waterproof in the washing machine. I also use the Nikwax one.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 03/12/2023 19:33

I use nikwax techwash too.

I use NikWax, it's what Seasalt recommend for their waterproof coats.
