Carpet cleaning solution - recommendations?

We've borrowed MIL's Bissell carpet cleaner for a few days, as our stairs / landing & DD's carpets were pretty minging!

I spent a good couple of hours doing DD's room today and it's looking a lot better, but I ran out of solution and there are still a few stubborn stains. So, I'm going to buy some more tomorrow - what works?!

It was 1001 3-in-1 stuff I had today, seems to foam up a lot and got through it really quickly (used a full bottle just on the one room).

Maybe I'd be better getting Bissell-brand stuff? No idea where to get it from though... I just used the 1001 stuff neat - I assume you don't dilute as the machine's supposed to do all that itself?

Can you tell I'm a novice at this cleaning lark?

I've got a Hoover Aquamaster and use 1001 machine liquid, you put the water in and then 2-3 caps ful of liquid and off you go.

That reminds me - must get off mn and do some housework...

Thanks :-) I got another bottle of the 1001 stuff and one of the Bissell ones as well for good measure LOL. Will keep the Bissell stuff here and send the 1001 back to MIL with the machine I think.

Didn't actually get round to doing the rest of the carpets though as it was getting late and would still have been damp when DP / DD got home. So I guess that's what I'll be doing on Sunday!

Captainmummy - the machine we've borrowed is a big upright and has a big water tank and then a separate little tank bit for the cleaning solution. According to the instructions, the machine should then dilute according to the settings you choose. But it holds half a bottle of liquid, and that didn't even do half of DD's carpet - think I will try it diluted a bit next time and see how I get on...

PrimulaVeris - where do you get the Vanish stuff from? I have a Vanish Carpet/upholstery cleaning spray thing which doesn't seem to do anything at all LOL, but I did try it on my (very dirty) cream sofa covers and not carpet!
