Kitchen Sink Blocked

When I wash up, I start to see bubbles / soap going up into the half sink. It's like a bubble bath after a while.
No noise just soap foam.
It's coming from the main sink while I'm washing up.
I've tried drain cleaners with no luck.
Been happening for a few months, at first I just thought the soap was coming over from gloves/ sponge and making the mess.
I definitely don't want to touch the pipes under the sink.

Sometimes you do just have to deal with the pipes under the sink, usually just the u-bend bit, which can get clogged up. It's not the nicest job in the world, but it's not awful.

Just read your edit. If it's just soap foam, then I don't think it's blocked, just that the soap bubbles take a while to pop

Aquarius1234 · 19/11/2023 11:56

Yeh it's not the usual blocked sink. Hard to explain.
But constant bubbles are annoying.
I didn't used to have the empty half sink filling up higher and higher with soap bubbles.

We get this , sink isn’t blocked just the soap bubbles are light and travel back up

I had very similar to this just last week, for me it was when I was draining the water, it was moving up to the half sink. I had to unblock the pipes. I've never done it before and in fact it wasn't so bad. In my case it wasn't the u-bend it was a pipe just after that, but it was very simple to pull out and then pull out the blockage, which was actually where the pipes connect. It took 10 minutes in the end and I felt quite pleased with myself.

Okay, was the blockage under the half sink?
I think I'm worried about water leaks and the smells haha.
I am always paranoid about leaks under the sink after a few issues, so feel I don't want to tamper with them.
Good you fixed yours!

Try a plunger, that normally clears quite effectively.

Helenahandkart · 19/11/2023 12:47

Undoing the u-bend is really easy. Put a bucket or a washing up bowl underneath as it will drip, and move all the cupboard contents out of the way first. Wear rubber gloves cos it’s a bit gross.
Have a look on YouTube. It really isn’t hard.

One thing to be aware of - if you remove the u-bend and want to rinse the gunk out of it, don’t do that at the kitchen sink. Use a different sink which hasn’t had its drain disconnected. I had a moment of idiocy and did this once 🤦🏼‍♀️

flagsrus · 19/11/2023 13:45

Can't you just put a plug into the half sink? The bubbles couldn't rise up then

Ok I might buy one of those modern ones.
Is it true you need to cover the half sink while pumping the main sink?

No the blockage was in the waste pipe after the u bend. Water was getting trapped and unable to drain away so every time i emptied the sink it went uphill into the half sink.

I had been plagued by a dreadful smell for weeks before and had been putting bleach down the sink. It's all good now. My pipes just slotted into each other, but it had got to the point where i couldn't wash up because the water would overflow from the half sink. A plunger didn't work for me.

Probably. You should just be able to put the plug into the half sink, and you may need to cover the overflows too. What you are trying to achieve is for the plunging action to affect the blockage, so anywhere that air can enter / exit in between the plunger and the blockage will cause it not to work.
