How do I clean this please?

The wood on my clothes airer is stained with what looks like mould. (3 pictures below) I've tried spraying with mould spray and using neat bleach on a cloth but it doesn't even fade. I'm thinking I maybe need to sand it off- but is there anything else I can try first.

Also, after 15 years of use, the rope is dirty and a little frayed. Would you buy new rope or wash this one and try to work around the fraying, maybe tying the knot above it?

Thankyou

I'd sand it

Thankyou. Was hoping there'd be a quicker way but at least it would be easy to sand I suppose!

If you sand it you should wear a proper mask and I’d probably do it outside - you don’t want to create breathable mould dust in your house.

Do you have a good specialist paint shop nearby where you could ask for advice on what to treat the wood with afterwards - oil, varnish or something else. They may also have something to treat mould on wood.

Plus one for sanding. What a lovely airer. Very much worth the effort.

A light rub down with a 120 grit sandpaper, maybe a stain to recolour, then a varnish over the top. I'd go for a decent yacht varnish as the clothes will be wet.

As for the rope, you could bleach or wash them, but it would be cheap enough to replace them. I would guess that you need sash cord for that.
