Cleaning muddy walking boots

I have 4 pairs of goretex walking boots that got extremely muddy and need cleaning.

I'm generally crap at cleaning and need some advice on how best to do it please. My plan was....

Hose off caked on mud outside
Remove laces and soak in warm water
Clean boots with soft sponge and warm water.

Do I need use any special products to clean them and will I need to re-waterproof them afterwards? Help please....

What are they made of? If the outer is suede, you'll need a suede brush. If some other man made substance, probably a rub over with a damp cloth. If leather, feed the leather and put some dubbin on to reproof.
