How do I keep my bathroom clean?

I never thought I'd ask such a dull question, but how do you keep a white bathroom clean? We had a new bathroom fitted recently (lucky us, I know) but it's all white and looks mucky almost immediately after it's been cleaned. With a toddler, a teen and a husband who likes to trim his beard (gah), am I going to be cleaning it every day?

We have a cleaner who comes once a fortnight (again, lucky us) but she's not particularly thorough IMO (and obviously you'd clean a bathroom weekly or more frequently) and I've also heard you shouldn't use bleach on a white bathroom... what the hell do you use instead?

I'm the one who does about 97 percent of the housework in our family so this is going to fall on me and I can't stand a dirty bathroom.

Any thoughts? Or do I just embrace the filth?

Husband needs to clean up after himself as a start.

Sack the cleaner if no good.
I just use normal cream cleaner in the bath and sink (rinse well so no residue) bleach in the inside of the toilet and wipes for the rest of the loo. Can’t say it’s ever looked grubby?

This ☝️ but there aren't any magic tricks other than to just clean it really. Keep products nearby and just give it a 5 minute whizz over each day. Squegee the shower screen, toilet duck down the loo and flash bathroom on the sink. Oh and get a better cleaner!

AlwaysFreezing · 09/11/2023 16:39

Keep it dry. Drying the sink and surrounding areas will make it look much better.

But dh doesn't leave beard trimmings lying around does he? Because he can't do that. Ridiculous.

Change your cleaner for one that can clean a bathroom, bleach is fine on the ceramic, might yellow anything plastic or laminate.

Sprinkle the beard clippings in his underpant drawer.

Tbf, the husband does wipe up his beard hairs, but he doesn't always get them all...

Thanks for the tips. We do need a new cleaner. I need to be braver because it's an awkward conversation I don't want to have!

Clean while you are supervising bathtime for DC. Polish mirrors, taps, tiles, clean sink and loo while you chat to them. A quick daily clean. Then when they get out of the bath give it a quick scrub and rinse while they are drying off.

And ask DH to clean up after his own whiskers. I am not a nag at all but I always chase adult DC if they leave the sink with shaved hair in it!

qotsa · 09/11/2023 16:59

@mssgrees blame it on the cost of living etc etc and get a new one.

mssgrees · 09/11/2023 17:12

@qotsa I worry she'll think I'm lying as we just had a new bathroom... although she knows that was paid for from my money I got from my dad (he passed away earlier this year). Maybe I should bite the bullet and do it.

New cleaner
Or supervise so she knows how to do it properly as cleaners are a rarity

Then keep it clean in between deep cleans
And cif cif cif !

White vinegar spray for chrome fixtures if you have them and then for the floor - assuming also white ? Get on your knees and wipe if not a big area - I hate mops they don't work

It's not hard but you have to keep on top of it

Tbh in bathrooms and oh is kitchen, hoover and pretty much all else as no one cleans the bathroom like me

Sorry I'm not for hiring and I know I know - I need to get a life but it's so de stressing !

A cleaner once a fortnight won’t keep it clean.
I do floors, tiles and all the porcelain properly twice a week, with the toilet, sink and shower getting a quick wipe down in between as needed.
I have a teen that beard trims every 5 minutes, he too misses hairs and it drives me nuts.
We have one set of towels that leaves the bathroom looking grubbier than others because they shed dark fluff, despite being several months old and frequently washed. Doing it so often means it’s quickly done though and it soon looks clean again. I wish I wasn’t so slovenly doing the rest of the house!
