Shoe storage in wardrobe: how to prevent smells?

We live in an apartment and for space reasons my shoes are stored in the bottom of my wardrobe. I’m finding that any clothes I haven’t worn for a couple of weeks smell a bit musty when I take them out. My shoes arent particularly smelly, and I give them a spray with deodorising anti bac stuff after most wears, but there is definitely ‘shoe smell’ there. I’ve tried neutrad air freshener gels (just make it smell artificial) and charcoal sacks (currently have 4 hanging in the wardrobe) but I don’t think they’ve made any difference.

any suggestions? I’ve trawled the websites but everything suggested is just variations on the theme of charcoal / moisture absorbers and I’m not convinced they actually work.

Plastic shoe storage boxes with laundry / fabric softener pearls shaken in them - just a few, not loads? Works really well.

Do you have any storage cupboards OP, e.g off the hallway where you can store vacuum cleaner, etc? If so something like this on the inside of the cupboard door… that way your shoes (and any outside dirt on them) are well away from your clothes
