hoovers that are good with sand and dog hair...?

this is on behalf of a friend, who's hoover is on it's last legs and will need repalcing soon. Can anyone recommend one that is good at picking up dog hairs (both hers are lab mixes, and so short haired) and sand, her ds's being 2 &4 and loving the sandpit outside.

I have a dyson all floors............ I find that works quite well and didnt they used to do a dyson pet vacuum?

Miele cat and dog always get good reviews but are very expensive.
