House fire

This morning at 1am our neighbours flat caught fire. Thankfully the fire was contained to their flat however we are opposite and our home smells so bad. Thankfully no smoke damage just the smell on burn. It was caused by an electrical heater sparking near by bin bag and the rest is obviously up in smoke.

I’ve been to the shop today to get air fresheners, strong sent candles and cleaned all our surfaces but the smoke damage in the hallway is terrible. My neighbours has been rehoused and wasn’t in at the time of the fire. I don’t want to sound rude as I only have the smell to contend with over the face of loosing my home.

any tips would be appreciated thanks x

Smoke is very tricky to get rid of. You need to dust and vacuum everything (new bag in the vacuum) then leave all the windows open front and back with fans the blow the air out (not suck in). Use the wind direction to help, and it would be advantageous if you were sulking in clean air from the opposite side to where the fire was.

Then dust and vacuum again. Vacuum as much as possible, curtains, blinds, furniture, everything.

Do you own or rent? This is something that an insurance policy should be dealing with, probably the renting of an air scrubber etc.

Smoke gets into everything, if you can, wash everything including walls, skirting, carpets etc

my capets are being cleaned on Monday anyway before all of this. Thank you I’ll hoover and clean everything again. I’ve gotten scented cleaning spay to try and help.

sadly and stupidly I didn’t have house insurance. I do now as of today
