We have an ikea mattress pad on top of our mattress. which is very comfy - it's foam so is nice and soft and warm, with a much firmer spring mattress underneath. my old mattress had springs poking through a bit and the mattress pad made it comfy again.

Me too. I've had awful hip problems and the IKEA topper has sorted it out! Also go a neck support pillow which I would highly recommend.

I thought I saw on TV that a mattress is not great after it has been in constant use for 10 years or more.

foxy - buy the most expensive you can afford. we replaced dds last year for a tempur, she had back probs, so much better now.

2 years ago i paid £3000 for our bed, it is the best investment ever, me and dh are both poor sleepers, but since new bed and mattress we too have been so much better (it dosen't creak either )

If your mattress is actually uncomfortable because of dips and lumps I'd go for it and get a new one - it needn't be horribly expensive.

We got a memory foam one a couple of years back for around £300ish, it is wonderful. If you prefer sprung you can still get decent ones at reasonable prices if you shop around.
