Tumble dryer in garage

What kind of tumble dryer do you have in your garage? Vented or condenser? If you have vented, where do you place the vent?

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for tumble dryer recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best tumble dryer page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

We have a condenser dryer in our garage. Not sure if it's supposed to be out there (minimum temperature?) but no issues after 6 plus years

Bobsledgirl · 30/09/2023 21:14

Neither. It blows hot air out the front so I put it next to an open door! Not ideal but does the job.

BlackandGold · 30/09/2023 21:17

Ours has been in the garage for over 30 years and vents out via the cat flap!

Haha mine too!

@WhyHasAllTheRumGone I am looking at a condenser but don't want it to break due to temp issues in the winter

Condenser one, had it 3 years and no issue about it breaking due to temp issues.

TheSnailAndTheWaaaail · 30/09/2023 21:25

We've had a Beko condenser in the garage for 7 years and no issues at all.

Fakeairpodsfakeoodie · 30/09/2023 21:27

Condenser and the water tray gets tipped out on the plant pots in the front garden, they seem to love it.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/09/2023 21:27

We used to have a vented one in the garage, at first we had to leave the side door open to put the hose out of, but when we had the door replaced we got one with a cat flap for it.

BlueRidgeMountain · 30/09/2023 21:27

I read a which article that said vented are supposed to be better for garages, as cold weather may cause problems with water freezing in condenser models.
we have a vented dryer, DH took a brick out the garage wall and fastened the vent there.

GunboatDiplomacy · 30/09/2023 21:28

DPs have had a condenser in the garage for years and it's been fine, although they are down south, it might be different in Aberdeen. It's a shame to waste all that lovely heat in the winter when it might be keeping your house warm, but if you don't have the space then you don't have the space.

ThatDreamSheep · 30/09/2023 21:29

Vented. Our garage had a hole in the wall the size of a tumble dryer pipe (guessing it was there on purpose!) so we put our pipe out of that.

splothersdog · 30/09/2023 21:29

Always had a condenser in the garage and never had an issue. If you empty it religiously at the end of each cycle I can't see there being a problem. The amount of standing water is negligible. Think it would have to be very cold for a persistently long spell?

TeenTraumaTrials · 30/09/2023 21:34

Condenser that is years old. In Scotland and never a problem even when really cold

Deathbyfluffy · 30/09/2023 21:35

Condenser is usually fine - we have a heat pump one out there and no issues

Playaville · 30/09/2023 21:37

Mine is vented and I just hang the hose out window at the back of the garage

icallitasplodge · 30/09/2023 21:38

Ours is a condenser. On cold days it takes FOREVER.

Butterkist8 · 30/09/2023 21:39

We have a condenser dryer in our garage.
It's a Beko one. The only reason we chose Beko was because it's guaranteed to work at low/freezing temperatures.

It's the same reason we bought a Beko upright freezer for the garage.

Sunny56 · 01/10/2023 21:45

Do you place your dryers directly on the garage floor or do you elevate it?

OP posts:
GuardiansPlayList · 01/10/2023 21:49

Condenser and it’s been fine.

GuardiansPlayList · 01/10/2023 21:50

On the floor.

SugarPlumpFairy3 · 01/10/2023 21:51

We had a condenser dryer in the garage for about 10 years with no problems. I can recommend the basic Beko ones-it’s been frankly amazing!

GetWhatYouWant · 01/10/2023 21:56

I've had a vented in there for over 25 years, I had a builder come and knock out a hole to put a liner in so the hose stays in there, it has a vent cover on the outside wall. The dryer is on an old piece of carpet on the concrete floor.

On the floor. Can't see why you'd want to elevate it, unless you have problems bending I suppose.

caringcarer · 02/10/2023 00:10

Condenser. It has been there for 6 years and no problems.
