Anyone else’s husband very particular about pillows?

My husband has a favourite pillow, he cannot sleep with anything else, my ex was the same. This pillow of his is £40 and is memory foam. He sweats a lot and his pillow and cases get stained and smell, changing the cases doesn't help unfortunately, the pillow needs a wash every now and then. Last time I washed it the whole thing broke and I couldn’t dry it, no matter how hard I tried. So I purchased him a new one. I’ve so far not touched it but… today I couldn’t resist and the exact same thing has happened. I placed it in the shower over a drying rack to rinse it with detergent and all was fine until it split in half. I’m trying my best with nearly breaking my hands squeezing water out, and using the dehumidifier, nothing is helping, it’s still ringing wet. I can’t even replace the pillow as the shop has discontinued it!!! He will not be very happy when he gets home because he’s now got nothing to sleep on. But it stank of sweat!!! I cannot just leave it like that. It’s still usable as it hasn’t split all the way through but it’s soaking wet. Help please 🙏

Are you using pillow protectors, washed on a weekly (or more) basis?

geoger · 23/09/2023 12:05

My hubby is the same with his pillow - he even takes it on holiday 🤣
Always use a pillow protector (2 in the summer) and if it’s very hot and hubby knows he’s going to sweat he puts a towel over the pillow too.
You’ll have to buy a new one, highly recommended the Otty pillows - great quality and really comfortable.

Mine's exactly the same OMG the dank and smelly pillows I have to throw out! Luckily though he prefers cheap thin pillows as he scrunches them up! Yes I use pillow protectors- got great ones from Wilco's 😭.

This. My husband and I both put a towel over the pillows when it particularly sweaty weather.

If a person has any sleep issues, postural issues, neck issues, even headache tendencies, the right pillow is phenomenally important. And the right pillow is the one that works for that person.
My DH also has that special pillow, I wouldn't dream of interfering with it, just get good multilayers of cover and wash them frequently.
Sleep is bloody important!

Thechocolateshop · 23/09/2023 12:20

@MNetcurtains yeah!!! Got a waterproof one with a normal pillow case on top. Changed once a week. It’s just the sweat smell makes me feel so unclean.

Don’t. Even. Go. There.
I use pillow case protectors that cost more than the damn pillows due to DH pillow fussiness.

I don't understand how the sweat is getting through to the pillow, particularly if the protector is waterproof. Also, waterproof protectors are sweat generators!

cocksstrideintheevening · 23/09/2023 12:30

No but I am and also take my pillows on holiday, was mightily fucked off when housekeeping took them in the summer and they got lost in the hotel laundry!

Have you got a protector on?

Thechocolateshop · 23/09/2023 12:56

So I think I’m going to have to check that they are waterproof… I’ve got ones I purchased which are waterproof but the one that came with it might not be. They are probably rotated 50/50 I bet it’s not waterproof 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

I suspect you're right. It's pretty easy to tell if they're waterproof. You might consider using more than one protector.

Thechocolateshop · 23/09/2023 17:44

Currently half dry 👍👍👍👍

Sweat stained pillows are the pits. The smell is horrible and you need to mitigate that by all means necessary. Double protectors, towel over pillowcase...whatever it takes.

Haveyouseenthemuffinman · 23/09/2023 18:10

My husband’s pillow (that comes on holiday with us) was an old (but good quality one) his parents gave him when he left home, 21 years ago.

The duvet that accompanied it (although it doesn’t match) has 1978 on the label.

Apparently no other pillow in the world does the job.

BoobyDazzler · 23/09/2023 18:15

My husbands feather pillow can get absolutely disgusting so I put theb whole thing in the washing machine with biological washing powder and then tumble dry it. It takes ages but works well. I don’t know how they can leave them when they get all yellow and greasy 🤮

Unfortunately, putting memory foam pillows in the washing machine is not an option. Neither is tumble drying.

My DH used to have a favourite £40 pillow, and he's now using a favourite £80 pillow. Shock

It came with its own protector. On top of that is a cotton pillow protector, washed every couple of months.

On top of that are 2 pillowcases, always washed weekly.

That seems to keep the pillow fresh enough. I'd be reluctant to wash the actual pillow as I'm sure it'd never be the same again, and he'd buy a new one.

DreamItDoIt · 23/09/2023 19:07

Best solution is to get him to sort his pillow. If you do the laundry just wash the pillow cases and covers. Does he ever think about washing it etc or is he not bothered?

ErrolTheDragon · 23/09/2023 19:32

We're both fussy about our pillows and have a memory foam one each (plus others for sitting up in bed). We don't have any problem with them getting sweaty though.

EggTheParrot · 23/09/2023 22:18

I love my pillow and it will be prised from my cold dead hands but it can be washed !

RedRobyn2021 · 23/09/2023 22:19

Yes!!

It's a really really really old pillow and I would love to throw it away but he's obsessed with it being the perfect pillow

Thechocolateshop · 24/09/2023 07:32

Does he wash bedding…. No 🤣 I think he would if I left it for 2 weeks because he would see the discolour on his pillow case. We have our chores we prefer and washing/hanging/putting clothes away he hates. Similar I hate hoovering and washing up, so we tend to split things that we prefer.

It was still half wet at 10pm so I put a waterproof protector and a pillow case on. Just woken up and he has put a blanket on top so that must mean he could feel the water seeping out 😑 I think maybe my protectors are not waterproof even though they say they are… going to have to purchase some more I think. It’s a mystery 👀
