Cleaning the thing at the bottom of shower screen

How on earth do I get the dirt out of the plastic runner thing that fits onto the bottom of the shower screen & stops the water coming out? I have tried with a toothbrushes, but they don’t reach deep enough. It’s grossing me out seeing the dirt in there. Last year I chucked one out because I couldn’t clean it, but I’m trying to care for the planet. Thank you to anyone who can help!

Pull it off and spray it with bleach spray?

britespark1 · 21/09/2023 20:18

I soak mine in the bathtub with hot water and bleach

PeacockHat · 21/09/2023 20:19

I take mine off and spray HG mould remover through it and leave it for about 30 mins. I then shove a long handled very narrow bottle brush through it and rinse. I was on the verge of replacing it before I tried this method!

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 21/09/2023 20:19

I put bleach in mine. Either spray or pour think stuff in. Leave it for a bit then rince out with the shower turned onto the pressure setting. I do find if I want to give it a wipe I can shove the corner of a cleaning cloth in and sort of drag it along.

My DM puts hers in the washing machine but it's a more flexible plastic than mine!

Pull it off and use a toothbrush or buy a new one and apologise to Greta.

sunflowers365 · 21/09/2023 20:23

Thank you everyone. Tried the toothbrush method and the bristles didn’t reach deep enough. Will try a bottle brush or the bleach method with the shower on high pressure. You have saved me !

I remove it and clean weekly more or less, so it doesn't get too gunky. But once it's stained it gets replaced - about once a year or 18 months.

I do this too

I hate mine! I try not to look. HG mould spray is great . I hate showers for this reason. It’s impossible to keep them mould and limescale free!

I use one of these from Ebay (£3) it's only thin so can clean little gaps

This is exactly what I do too. ^

I can’t remember where I got the long spiral brush from but it works really well and my shower glass screen always looks fresh.

Thanks @user1471517095 I’ve just ordered a pack of those from Amazon!

Dishwasher

LesLavandes · 21/09/2023 20:58

Could someone please post a photo of what you are talking about. Thank you!

F1ymetothetoon · 21/09/2023 21:02

Soak in shallow water in the bath with bleach and cold water approximately 30 minutes comes up like new.

Steev · 21/09/2023 21:23

What bit?!

F1ymetothetoon · 21/09/2023 22:19

@Steev and @LesLavandes it's the clear plastic bit at the bottom of a bath shower screen that stops the water from splashing onto the floor.

RandomMess · 21/09/2023 22:20

Toothbrush and pipe cleaner

lifeishitandmiss · 21/09/2023 22:23

The clear rubber flap strip that clips to the bottom of the glass.

Anyway. Peel it off and soak in bath then scrub with various sponges and toothbrushes.

Viakal and bleach are your friends. Open the window!

butteredbarmbrack · 21/09/2023 22:27

I use these from Lakeland www.lakeland.co.uk/23618/bumper-pack-of-35-mini-cleaning-brush-sticks

Tilllly · 21/09/2023 22:49

I'm not going to look at mine...

GingerIsBest · 21/09/2023 22:51

Wait, you can buy replacement ones?! I am embarrassed I did not know this! My shower is a D shape over the bath so not sure how I figure out the right size, but this could be life changing!

I also do the soak in bleach thing. Then rinse. I usually do the tricksy bits that are irritating and difficult with a cotton bud .

PickAChew · 21/09/2023 22:55

An interdental brush would get in there. (they're also great for plugholes and grubby gaps anywhere, never mind between your teeth.)

Ours doesn't get removed that often because the edges are annoyingly sharp.

thatwassociopathic · 21/09/2023 22:57

They cost about a fiver on Amazon. But I also just put the bleach nozzle at the open end and squeeze hard to fill it. Bleach is your friend

Florabundance · 22/09/2023 17:14

I peel it off on then wrap a thin vinegar soaked cloth round my finger, run my finger down the gap/space/ groove and it comes up like new.
