Ice keeps building up back of Fridge, Is it time for a new Fridge?

I've got a normal size fridge. I cleaned the back on 30 Aug and I can see ice has started to build up. The drain hole at the back looks clear. I did use something to clean it on 30th, it wasn't blocked anyway. it gets so bad after some time then water starts melting from the ice, thats when I take a fan heater and hold it there then the big ice comes out in one big piece.

Should I get a new fridge, is this one on the way out?

Sounds like a wet wall fridge, so it will keep happening. We buy frost freeze fridge freezers never had too defrost our.

Have you switched the fast freeze on by mistake?

mumznet · 09/09/2023 15:03

thanks . its not a fridge freezer. its just a fridge so it doesn't have fast freeze

Ours does the same so following with interest. Ours is only 4 years old!

@Roselilly36 do you mean frost free?

@mumznet 😂 yes! That’s what you need, slightly more expensive but much more convenient.

Are you letting things be pushed to the back? That causes water build up and freezing. Have you checked and cleaned the outlet at the back of the fridge? Poking the drainage hole inside doesn't clear a build up of stuff on the outlet. Is it pushed right up against the wall or is there a proper space for air circulation, ventilation and a good temperature differential where heat isn't building up behind and making the fridge work harder to cool?

@Roselilly36 haha. where do you recommend to buy? does any one have a good under counter fridge they recommend?

@NeverDropYourMooncup yes its quite near the wall. does the drainage hole need cleaning behind the fridge?

Is it a Samsung by any chance? We had this and it ended up with something breaking. The guy who came to repair it said it's an issue but I don't remember the details. They're supposed to freeze and unblock themselves but if the ice gets too much the motor can't cope or something. Ours still freezes up but hasn't had any more issues 4 years on. It was a cheap enough fix tbh so I wouldn't worry. If I see the ice building up now I turn the temp up a bit but it's only been a couple of times. We did have the fridge on the coolest setting when it happened which we don't do now.
