What is causing this weird smell?

I'm just home from a few days away, and my bathroom smells odd. It's a slightly sweet, almost floral scent - a little like a floral scented cleaning product (or those horrific scented sanitary towels). We don't use scented cleaning stuff, and definitely haven't used any today but I've just been in there and can smell it. DH has been here all week, isn't one for scented stuff generally and can't think of what it is either.

Can anyone suggest what it might be and how I make it go away? It's so weird!

Any plants outside? Pick be that it always smells like that in there and you've been nose blind. He break is allowing you to smell it again

ilovepixie · 02/09/2023 16:53

Hate to say it but another woman's perfume?

WetBandits · 02/09/2023 16:53

Toilet roll? I bought a coconutty one by mistake and it took me ages to work out where the unusual but lovely smell was coming from 😂

Oh wow that didn’t take long 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Shampoo/conditioner leaking in cupboard.

Justbetweenus · 02/09/2023 16:54

We had a slow leak which created a weird smell - I’d have said sour milk rather than floral, but covid did weird things to my sense of smell. Have you checked behind bath panel etc. for leaks?

Indeed - I wasn't anticipating that! Also another woman wandering round my house spraying hideous perfume only in the bathroom whilst I was out with DH seems tremendously unlikely.

No plants outside, and the loo roll is the same brand as always - although I am intrigued by coconut scented...

Do you use any toiletries with fragrance that are in the bathroom?

cruffinsmuffin · 02/09/2023 17:18

Could the drains do with an unlock? If I smell similar I whack a drain cleaner down and it clears it!

Ladybird69 · 02/09/2023 17:21

Sometimes damp can smell sweet! Could you have a leak somewhere? Mine was under the shower and didn’t notice it for ages.

Dead mouse?

Was your DH out with you or was he at home all week as you’ve mentioned in OP? It’s confusing - if he was home while you were away, he must know what it is (unless he’s nose blind and just hasn’t noticed it)

Howdoesitworkagain · 02/09/2023 17:31

Have you checked the bin?

Maryjaneslastdance · 02/09/2023 17:31

Had similar although it didn't smell sweet. Turned out it was wiring in the airing cupboard causing it.

bellac11 · 02/09/2023 17:33

You might be using the same brand but has the toilet paper changed, yes there are scented ones now

CantThinkOfANameAtAll · 02/09/2023 17:36

Mould. Some fungus can give off a faint sweet smell. Check behind your bath panel for leaks.

midlifecrash · 02/09/2023 17:36

Mildew or rotting wood?

PenCreed · 02/09/2023 18:08

Clarification: DH was out with me today, but home all week. I noticed the smell when I came home last night, didn't notice it this morning then noticed it again when we came home this afternoon. He hasn't noticed anything but also not the best at that sort of thing.

I have now cleaned the bath/sink/behind the sink and checked for mould (nothing). The cupboard at the end of the bath smells normal, but I think I might have traced it to the shower curtain - even though I only washed it two weeks ago! I will wash it again and if that doesn't fix it then I'll have to try and take the bath panel off.

soupmaker · 02/09/2023 18:13

Did you use softener in your wash? Could that be what the shower curtain is smelling off?

bellac11 · 02/09/2023 18:20

Different shower gel that has got on the shower curtain, conditioner stuck to it?

I was going to say this too as I did exactly the same thing!

sarahc336 · 02/09/2023 19:06

I'm going to say a semi blocked drain, old water can smell strange. Kinda sweet. Try drain cleaner/unblocked. Would make sense as if you've been away no water has been put down the drains so are likely to smell more 😁

Haha, is it the Nicky one?! It smells so nice and it’s really cheap but good quality, so I may or may not have continued to buy it Grin
